About Typewriter & Moss

From Thoughtful Things to Trusted Recommendations

I’m Joan Rivera, and Typewriter & Moss began as something quite personal. For years, this space was a creative journal of sorts filled with reflections on handmade goods, vintage tools, and the quieter objects of daily life.

I used to work in a small art supply store in Portland, Oregon, where I helped customers find everything from calligraphy nibs to aged paper stock. That job shaped how I see things: details matter, function matters, and not everything beautiful works well in the real world.

I studied Material Culture and Design History, which probably explains my soft spot for craftsmanship and usability. But beyond academics, it’s life experience fixing jammed typewriters, returning disappointing purchases, or stumbling on a product that surprisingly outperforms that taught me what truly counts.

Why the Shift?

By 2025, I realized people weren’t just looking for pretty things they wanted help making smart choices. I found myself spending hours reading reviews before buying even the simplest gadget. That’s when I thought: maybe I could use this blog to make that process easier for others. Now, Typewriter & Moss focuses on reviewing real products that I’ve actually used and being honest about the good, the bad, and everything in between.

I don’t write based on press releases or marketing copy. I test items in my own home, on my own time, and I write like I’d talk to a friend. If something’s worth the money, I’ll explain why. If it falls short, I’ll explain that too.

What You’ll Find Here

This site covers a wide range of items home tools, everyday tech, personal accessories, kitchen gear, and thoughtful finds that improve daily life. Every review reflects actual use, not assumptions. I pay close attention to things like durability, ease of use, setup, and whether a product holds up after a few months, not just the first impression.

I’m part of the Amazon Affiliate program, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through links here at no extra cost to you. But that doesn’t influence my opinions. I value your trust more than any referral.

A Note from Me

I still keep a vintage typewriter near my desk. It’s mostly symbolic now, but it reminds me to slow down and look closely. That’s the same approach I take with this blog. No hype. No gimmicks. Just clear, thoughtful reviews to help you feel more confident about what you buy.

Thanks for being here.
